5 Tips To Getting The Images You Love From Your Kids’ Birthday Parties

It’s party time! You did your maternity photoshoot, or even a newborn photoshoot… And here we are at the full month celebration party! Then there’s the one-year birthday party, and so on…

We know how crazy it can get especially with all the planning involved, your caterers, your guest list, the decoration… And now what about the photos?? This is where we come in!

Here are some tips to getting the images you love from your kids’ birthday parties:

1. Don’t try to be mom, dad, party planner, AND photographer.

It’s stressful enough to make sure everyone of your guests is well taken care of, the food all arrived on time, and your baby all comfy and happy… And still you want to take beautiful pictures?? Give yourself a break on the actual day, during the party and just enjoy and spend time with family and friends! You can only give attention to so many things at one time. Let the focus be on your birthday kid and let us take the photos for you.

You’ve done so much work, you’ll want to be in the pictures of your child’s special day too, and I’m sure your baby would want to see pictures taken together with you when they’re grown up.

2. Plan ahead! Your Venue matters!

Parties are the weekend’s favourite and we can only squeeze that many appointments in those 2 days. We do have several photographers with us, but weekend slots do get fully booked first, so drop us a message even if it’s to reserve the slot for you!

Our photographers come ready with the lighting we need for events, but every venue is unique to their own. Some location have ambient lighting, while others are lit with white light… If you’re having your party in the afternoon, we can expect some beautiful natural light from the sun too! Pick the venue for the atmosphere you like, and your photos will give the same mood :)

If natural light is your go-to choice, when you recce for a location, go at the timing of your party so you can gauge how bright the place will be. If you don’t want everyone to turn all yellow skin, then we would say, avoid places that are lit with spotlights or are too dark with only some ambient lighting.

3. Communication is key! Talk to us!

No individual is the same, and we don’t want to assume we know what is important to you to capture. For some it would be photos of your kid with his or her grandparents, for others, it could be the specially designed birthday cake you did for your baby, or even group shots when you’re singing the Happy Birthday song! I mean how often do you get to gather around friends and families like that, right? Of course, we cannot forget the birthday boy or girl, photos of him or her could be your priority too.

Give us a list of all your must-have shots, and we’ll make sure we check it all off and get the most of the shots you love to have!

4. Give attention to relationship

What’s best about a birthday party, even as we celebrate with the birthday kid, is the fact that we all have an “excuse” and make time to gather and spend time together as friends and families. The birthday party gave us a venue to gather with the people we love most.

And you know what would give you the best photos? When we give attention to the relationships we have. Keep away your phone, remove any ipads, don’t let any device become a distraction. Our photographers are looking out for moments to capture, and we need your help to create those moments. Give your child lots of cuddles, get the cousins to tickle each other. Let them play with toys and laugh together. Tell a silly joke and crack them up! It’s those unscripted moment that we will come to cherish the most.

Our photographers won’t intrude on your space, even as we give direction for posed group shots, let us capture those un-posed, candid moments that tell a beautiful part of your story too.

5. Embrace the “chaos” at a party

We all know how it can get “dramatic” with one kid… what’s more, if there are quite several of them all gathered in one place. There’s lots of sugar in the cakes, or dessert and kids are running around, adrenaline is on the high… Don’t get too frustrated if things are not “perfect”, we find beauty even in the “chaos”. Let us record the authencity of the moment, a spilled cup of milk can be the talk of the table years from now when we have photos of it and laugh at how silly our expressions were when it happened..

At the end of the day, it’s the memories we want to remember and let us help you do that with photos.

Top 8 Reasons Why Families Do Professional Family Portraits

Over the years of photographing families of all shapes and sizes at Bambini Photography, we have come to realise that these families that make time to do a professional family portrait come, because of various events that triggered them to do so. The ultimate objective is always the same, portraying the idea behind “One Happy Family”. This idea though sound simple, there are many permutation to this.

The trigger events however is varied between each individual or family.

We have compiled the Top 8 List of Reasons Why Families Do Professional Family Portraits.

1. Celebrate Milestones

Birthdays, Anniversaries, Graduations.

One of the most common reason why people come to have a professional photoshoot is “Celebration”, its to celebrate the milestones of a person’s life such Birthday… Child, Mum, Dad, Grandparents, Anniversary, 10, 15, 25, 50 years wedding anniversary, New addition to the family, Wedding, Having a newborn baby, or someone’s graduations.

These are the moments people want to remember their life with and usually its one of the top reason why people contact us for a family photo shoot. It can be done in our studio, outdoor or at your home.

2. Someone in the family is ill or dying.

Life is beautiful until we received a death sentence by our sickness. After the sadness passed, the only thing we all want to do is to have everyone in the family around. Majority of time, it is the time to do the shots that immortalised what it means to be a family.

We have done plenty of family in this setting… what makes or breaks the shoot is the ability to be sensitive and be professional to get the best shots of everyone and the individual. Yes, it will come a point where someone in the family need that one photo. Many make it in time to get the portrait done but some sadly don’t.

In shoots like these, we often get hinted by the ‘organiser’ to get a proper and nice individual shot of the individual to stand-by for the ‘Lorry Photo’. It’s something everybody wants deep down but nobody wants to talk about. It is never too early to get it prepared. We have professional experience that we know for sure how to navigate and make it pleasant for everyone.

So next time you arrange a family photography, include the grandparents and let us get you the “shots” in the most pleasant way.

3. Frustrated for Not Being In The Shots.

It is all nice and good when you have tonnes of the images of your spouse and children. If you look through your phone and don’t see yourself. What makes you think that people know that you exist? No one want to be in the position to be known as “the person who is not there”.

Sure, occasional selfies or wefie might be great, how many of that is printed, showed and appreciated like an art? That’s right… it stays in the phone until something happen to it and it is all gone.

I am not saying that you shouldn’t take pictures yourself, but merely wanted to bring awareness that even professional like ourselves get people to do a portrait for our own family every now and then.

It may sounds superficial to have “that” family photo, but the fact is, it is about the family connection that we are trying to portray.

Some are happy being out of the picture as they feel they need to lose that extra few kilos to get back to pre-child weight before considering to be in front of the camera. You know it… if you are one of the few lucky ones who can achieve it within 3 months, we congratulate you and we are filled with envy. However, the reality is the majority of us do take quite a while to get back to pre-child weight or shape (fingers crossed).

There is a tipping point where enough is enough. This tipping point is usually a time where you scroll back the photos and realise you’re not in it most of the time and when your kids ask ‘why aren’t you in the photo’ or “I remember where we were at xxx place this photo” and starts to describe what they remember of that day the photo was taken…. with no mention whatsoever of mummy’s weight or looks at that time.

This tipping point varies and some take many years to realise, some see it within the first year or so. And this is when they decided to look around for recommendations for a family photographer that they believe will get beautiful pictures of their family, with YOU in it.

One of our long time client mentioned that they love photographing and videoing their kids on their mobile phone but would still want to have at least ONE PROPER family and sibling photo a year and religiously made time to schedule in their family shoot every year. It’s their form of getting the kids to remember they are ONE Family and they do have lots of love and fun with one another.

4. When Everyone is Back Home

Globalisation has made travel easier, living in different countries and places for your immediate family seems to be a norm nowadays. Even in normal life, how much time do you really come together as one family and do something together?

You wake up, go to work, come home late, dinner, play with the kids, sleep and tomorrow is another groundhog day and before we know it, our kids are grown, our parents getting old.

Festive season gives a reason for everyone to sit back, relax and reflect on their achievements, creating some bonding time.

This is a perfect time and perhaps the “excuse” that you are looking for to get those important but not urgent kind of shots done once and for all.

Leave it to professional like us as we make it simple for you and all you need to do is turn up and walk away with beautiful shots of everyone. Do contact us for a chat to see how we can help.

5. When you have visiting family from back home (eg. grandparents)

For many expat families, Asia is an interesting place and Singapore is one of the major city that many people want to visit.

When you have families who come for a visit, wouldn’t be nice to create memories that they can be proud of for many years to come?

Grandparents are people who treasure memories and a gift of photograph is perhaps the most valuable one that you can give them.

A lot of our expat clients told us that, doing a shoot like this allow them to kill 2 birds with one stone. Present for the grandparents and present for their own family.

The UNESCO site of Botanic Garden, The wonder of Cool Flower Dome at Garden By the Bay, The relax area of East Coast Park, The heritage Peranakan houses in Joo Chiat, Emerald Hill and Club street, The Marina Promenade of the futuristic urban Singapore’s landscape… Or it can be as simple as your home and its surrounding.

Whenever it is, it is as easy as a phone call to our studio and we will help you to pick one that is the most suitable to your family.

6. Before someone leaves home for work/studies/NS

Travel has become more affordable and we can easily take a flight to other countries.

It’s easy to know of someone whose brother or sister, son or daughter who will be moving abroad for work or studies. Maybe someone who is going to be enlisted to national service and wants to have the family portrait done before the guy goes botak.

This is one reason that many come through our studio. Give us a call for a chat and see how we can work together.

7. Update Family Portrait

Last one was taken 10-15 years ago?

Many a times, we walk pass the hallway and see that the family portrait every day. One fine day, you walk pass and realised the much younger you on the photo and realised the shot was taken perhaps 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20 years ago. Holy moly… you don’t look like that anymore, your children now are taller than you… that bald baby is grown with a full head of hair or perhaps there is another addition to your household.

Grandparents are from the era that they need to save save and save… life was not as easy or as accessible as in today. So they won’t ask and deep down, you know that they love to have it… how long would you like them to wait?

If this is your situation, drop us a quick call or email and we will take care of you…

8. Know someone who fits in Points 1-7 above?

I know, I know… this is not the year… maybe next year… we hear that way too often.

Many times, finding the perfect gift to give is a challenge especially when the recipient already have most material things that they need… so what else would be meaningful for them? Perhaps going to a family photoshoot to have some fun and enjoy the experience while getting beautiful images at the end of it all and having tangible memories framed and displayed at the family home or work place.

You can easily purchase the voucher through our website and offer them to someone who you care about.

We had an awesome maternity cum family photoshoot with Bambini. All queries with regards to shooting day, attires, photos selection, special upgrade packages etc. were addressed promptly and the staffs are also nice & warm.

On the shooting day, our photographer Fatilyn has managed to capture all the precious moments in freeze frames. I can see joy, I can see love, I can see bliss in the pix. She also managed to capture my 2 elder kids’ cheeky moments. Friends have commented that there are so much love in the photos. And the service is really fast, I get to view the 100+ drafts on the same day of the shooting! We even manage to get their goodwill services for additional editing on some of the photos as per our request.

Conclusion: love, love the photos outcome. Price is reasonable too & it feels comfortable doing the maternity shots as the photographer is very professional. Highly recommended to all friends out there & will definitely come back again for our future shoots.

Hey ho, hail all pirates | Themed Children Photoshoot

pirates-theme-children-photoshoot-06

It’s not just another day in the studio. While some of us were busy photographing earlier, the doorbell dinged, the new theme set-up we’ve been waiting for has arrived!

After many requests from parents and children we met and photographed, we are happy to announce our latest Pirate-themed photoshoot.

A tale no less familiar to all of us, pirates are always such fun characters to know – with their fiery personas, countless stories of adventures, voyages to seek hidden treasures on their galleon with distinctive Jolly Roger flag.

Children simply love them! And we at Bambini Photography are not immune to it either. How can we not fall in love with courageous swashbucklers who are thirsty for adventures and are masters at navigating the seas?

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series have made it all the more irresistible for those who are fans of pirates.

Watch your little one squeal with delight as we pretend to be pirates out on an adventure! – brandishing their choice of swords and fight enemies as they go along – all in a safe environment while being photographed. (Don’t worry, the swords are made of foam and plastic!)

We want to capture your children at their happiest and most natural – that we believe happens when they are most enjoying themselves and having fun! Allowing them to explore and be themselves, that for us, is the greatest achievement.

The Essence of Family | Family Photography

We’d like to take on Tolstoy on his take on ‘family’ but we rather stick to what we know best. After years of taking family photographs, we can safely say that “No one family is the same.”

Fam·i·ly ˈfam(ə)lē/

From our search, the dictionary shows that a family is a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.

However, things are fast-changing in the modern context.

Families come in all shapes and sizes, numbers, just like ourselves and our dress sizes.

Some families do not live together in one household, because they are separated by seas, circumstances, work. Some families do not have a complete set of parents, due to illnesses, separations, estrangement or even death. Some families are childless choosing to adopt pets as children. Some families are made different. Some families are adopted or fostered.

But all of them are still families!

Being a part of a family means accepting each other’s differences, to protect and respect, to comfort each other in times of happiness and sadness, and to support one another to higher grounds, to share memorable life experiences together and to celebrate moments as one.

Those essences are what make family beautiful- the odds and differences of each character and member of the makeup of a family.

And we love capturing them on camera. To have perfectly encapsulated them in pictures, their frowns, their laughters, their cheekiness, their tears, their care for each other.

In this festive season, we are calling all families, whatever you are to give yourself a shot at having your family photos taken. Share with others your joy, your beautiful clan that brings you the most happiness. Show them off and show the world how proud you are of your family.

No matter how big or small, how diverse, how unconventional, how normal. Display your family portraits at home, in your office, your bathroom, your wallet. Because trust us, it is this little thing that you’d look back time and again that will put a smile on your face when you caught sight of your family on the framed photo or even the one tuck in your purse.

Now, that’s what we call a worthy purchase.

Talk to our photographers about what you want for your photos. Do you want a large canvas prints, beautifully framed prints or just in digital formats? We have printed and delivered them all.

How to Get Kids to Engage and Smile For Camera | Children and Family Photography Singapore

As parents ourselves, we know that things can get pretty out of hand when children are involved. Nothing ever goes as planned but more often than not, it is exactly that unpredictability that makes the spontaneous moments that we remember for years and make up for the stories that continue to haunt them as we retell them at family gatherings.

Photographing children can be quite daunting for unseasoned photographers. Most children do not like posing for the camera and get easily distracted by their surroundings and that can be difficult for photographers to capture the moment as everything is unraveling way too fast. So out-of-focus and blurry pictures are often common when it comes to photographing kids.

Having learned, played and photographed thousands of babies, toddlers, children and teenagers, we can confidently say that we are quite the pro when it comes to children photography.

So today we are going to share with you some insider tips and insights on how to ace it.

Children comes in all shapes, sizes and behaviours. You can consider yourself lucky if you get to work with children who take instructions easily but in most cases it is hardly the case – they are children. And the best thing about children is, they don’t follow the rules.

  1. Breaking the ice

Just before we approach any photography session, it’s best to leave it to the parents to gain a better understanding of the kids. Parents will be asked to fill-up questionnaires to help us know about the children.

Yong En says, “The information they give us can really help us break the ice with the kids and family. If we know what they [the kids] enjoy doing, we’ll know how to engage them.”

  1. Being patient and observant pay off

Patience is the number one key when dealing with the little ones. We don’t have to coerce kids to do what they don’t want to do. We absolutely advised parents against disciplining their children when things get out of hand during a photoshoot. It should be a fun and rewarding experience for all, so no one should be upset. This is the time where your children can get messy, dynamic and spontaneous for our camera to capture their personality.

Yong En recalls this incident where, “There was a kid who wasn’t keen on having his photos taken, then I saw that his bag is pinned with minecraft badges… so I figured he must like it… I asked him about it and he started opening up. The rest of the shoot in the botanic gardens became me and him out in a minecraft world attacking minecraft monsters. It was really fun!”

It worked and sometimes we need just to pay closer attention to get the children’s.

  1. Playtime is mandatory

“Telling kids to pose and smile don’t always work, so we PLAY, have fun, eat snacks. It helps if they are your children’s favourite”, says Yong En.

We laid out all the toys, balloons, cupcakes, kitchen sets, for the children to go crazy with. It is after all their time to shine so let them do their job and everything will be swell.

  1. Being a part-time clown works too

We believe in engaging with the children. Because what’s a photography session without some fun injected to it?

Some of the things we do include, tickling the kids with fake flowers. Making funny fart noises , peek-a-boo, or sneezing just to catch their attention.

Even our singing voices are put to the test at times. “There was a kid who only stops crying when I sang nursery rhymes, and would immediately cry again when the song ends. He was only a few months old and singing really engaged him. I have never sung so much and so long in my life. I felt like I just did a Hi-5 concert. Hahaha…”, adds Yong En.

  1. Know your subjects in and out, and if you don’t find out!

Always get to the children’s level, not just eye-level. What we found that works wonder is to keep talking to them, eye-to-eye. Helping them to get comfortable with us, the photographers is crucial, because children tend to be wary and become withdrawn in an unfamiliar environment.

Ask them a bunch of questions, it might take a while for them to answer, but once you hit the right one, they will start opening up and smile for you. And the rest is history. This works highly with children who are on the shy side.

  1. Treat everything with spontaneity

There are children who just can’t sit still, no matter what tricks you have up your sleeves. In turn, asking them to stay quiet for a shot can upset them. So making sure we are versatile and flexible is key to getting the perfect shot.

Yong illustrates one typical incident, “ Asking kids who love running up and down to sit still won’t work… maybe for the first few shots… but forcing them can upset the kid, but if they don’t do it, it can upset the parents. So I always go for the rewarding system. I would tell the kids to run but specifically cue them to smile while running, in which gives me the perfect moment to take my shots. So they can be running round and round for me to get my shots, but everyone is happy. And that’s all that matters eventually.”

For kids with siblings, we would usually encourage them to play together and set it so that both personalities are captured, these usually make perfect ‘siblings-moments’ photos.

We feel that should be enough for now to equip you with a better understanding of the behind-the-scenes. Knowing what gear and equipment to use and planning ahead is necessary but it all boils down to the basics, which is, knowing your subjects and to be in tune and intuitive to their needs are what makes good children photographer.
