Love the playful idea of a Cake Smash, but don’t actually want the cake?

A Fruit Smash is a colourful alternative for families who would like to photograph their child’s birthday with something a little different.

Instead of a birthday cake, baby gets to explore and enjoy fruit, creating the same opportunity for curious expressions, messy hands and spontaneous reactions without needing a traditional Cake Smash.

At Bambini, we’ve used watermelon because its bright colour photographs beautifully and it’s easy for little hands to explore.

Fruit Smash can also be combined with classic birthday portraits and family photographs, so the entire photoshoot doesn’t have to revolve around the fruit.

Why Choose A Fruit Smash Instead Of Cake Smash?

Families may choose Fruit Smash simply because:

✓ Their child already enjoys fruit
✓ They prefer not to use a birthday cake
✓ They want something colourful and playful but a little different
✓ They like the idea of letting baby explore a familiar food naturally

There’s no right choice between Cake Smash and Fruit Smash. The important thing is choosing something your child is already comfortable with and your family is happy to use.

Why Watermelon?

Watermelon works particularly well visually because of its strong colour and size, while also giving babies something they can touch, hold and explore.

Most importantly, the fruit used should be something your child has already eaten safely and is comfortable with.

Can Siblings Join A Fruit Smash Photoshoot?

Yes.

An older sibling can join the birthday photographs and, where appropriate, interact with the birthday child during the Fruit Smash too.

Rather than making every photograph about the setup, we can also photograph the siblings simply being together — playing, sharing and interacting naturally.

Can We Take Family Photographs Too?

Yes.

As with a Cake Smash session, we can photograph the classic portraits first while everyone is clean and ready for photographs, before moving into the messier part of the session.

This can include the birthday child alone, siblings, photographs with Mum and Dad, and the whole family.

If updating your family photographs is an important part of the birthday session, see our Family Photoshoot packages and what to expect.

Not Sure Whether You Want A Smash At All?

Fruit Smash and Cake Smash are only two ways to celebrate a birthday in photographs.

You can also keep things completely classic or use a birthday celebration backdrop without any food involved.
