Ditch The Phone – Incorporate New Experiences With Your Kids This School Holidays

School Holidays Activity Ideas

When school holidays approaches, parents start to look for things to fill their days when the kids are home. It’s also usually the school holidays where parents create new experiences for the kids and perhaps for themselves at the same time.

Duchess of Cambridge (now Princess of Wales) revealed in her Happy Mum, Happy Baby Interview Podcast in 2020 that she tries to incorporate a lot of experiences that her granny gave her; into the experiences she give to her children now. Doing simple things like taking a walk, cooking, doing arts and crafts and essentially spending time together. Here are a few ideas that families can do with their kids this school holidays.

1. Reconnect With Nature This School Holidays

Take a break from the city life and reconnect with nature. Get outdoors and spice up your healthy living habits by exploring the nature reserves and parks via the Park Connector Network of Singapore (PCN)!

Whether it’s cycling, walking, running or hiking, take some time away from the screens and dive into an adventure like no other? It’s a great way to get the whole family involved with physical activity and bonding.

Get out and make some lasting memories while staying active in spectacular sights around our garden city.

2. Cooking Or Baking Together

Bonding experiences in the kitchen are invaluable for both parents and children. In pre-schools, the kids get to do pretend play at the kitchen corner. When you cook or bake together with the kids, the little ones get to watch the process of making real food from scratch, and they even get to help out! Not only do they learn how to make delicious dishes, but also how to practice delayed gratification by creating something together over time.

After a successful batch of cookies or tasty pasta dish, not only are bellies satisfied, but memories made that last a lifetime – ones that will definitely be looked back on one day with a grateful heart and childlike smile. So get the kids involved today – let them know they’re just as important in the kitchen as dad and mom!

3. Playing Games During School Holidays

If you’re looking for some good old-fashioned fun, nothing beats playing games with your family!  Playing games is an timeless way to bring together people of all ages and have a great time.

From card games like uno, to board classics such as Monopoly, or even some of the amazing video games gets everyone to increase their team work skills to bring everyone together For the younger kids, the exercise allow them to practice and learn to take turns.

You might be surprised just how much fun you can have while making good memories at the same time. Get competitive, joke around and enjoy each other’s company while doing something active that’ll make everyone laugh!

4. Create Something Together This School Holidays

We all take far too many photos these days. From selfies to record keeping photos; saving photos  taken by the preschool teachers. With the average person spending over three hours on their phone every day, it’s no wonder our photo libraries are overflowing. But what good are all those pictures if they’re just sitting on our phones, never to be seen again?

This school holidays, why not involve your kids and family in compiling their memories? Go through your family photos together, shortlist the ones you want to print and make into photo albums or even for scrap booking. You can sort the photos by year and compile those photos into a yearly like some of our clients have done. It’s a great bonding activity and a rewarding experience to look back on those happy memories for years to come. It’s a celebration of little moments that benefit us even if they’re small.

5. Go On An Adventure

Exploring new places in your own country can be a fun and rewarding adventure. Taking the time to engage with new cultures, unfamiliar sights, and different sounds, can be energizing and inspiring. Take advantage of the opportunity, no matter where you live – hit the beach to watch a sunset, visit an old temple or take a night time stroll through the city. Be a tourist all over again. As a tourist you’ll be inspired by new experiences as you observe and learn from all that new environment has to offer – new life stories, food specialties and beautiful scenery. So no matter how often you’ve traveled before – don’t forget to take some time out and explore the new side of Singapore that’s waiting for you!

What Now?

This school holidays, don’t forget to prioritise family bonding. With the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, it’s easy to take time with those closest to us for granted.

There are many ways to share some special moments together. From getting outside in nature, cooking together in the kitchen, playing games on the couch, creating something together; whatever you decide on there will be an invaluable return – quality time spent with your loved ones!

Put aside all distractions from daily life – unplug from work emails and Netflix binges – and go on an adventure together.

Above all else, remember to have fun! And if you find yourself needing help in compiling photos into an album to keep those good times alive, then don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Watch Me Grow – Studio Family Photography Singapore

We consider ourselves lucky. Lucky to be able to witness the love and care in families, and watch them grow from the shoots they’ve had with us through the years.

One of the most common reason why people come to have a professional photoshoot is to celebrate and capture the moment. Celebrate the milestones of a person’s life such as birthday, children, mum, dad, grandparents, years of wedding anniversary, new addition to the family, wedding, having a newborn baby, baby’s milestones or graduations.

For some it starts with their first Maternity Shoot as a couple, then a 6-Months Baby Shoot, then a Family Shoot, and then a Generational Family Shoot. Sometimes, the list goes on because photos are never too much – every major milestone is different.

Too often we hear parents say, “It feels like it was just yesterday when they were little.” Time passes us by, and before you know it, our babies are all grown.

The best part of having your photos taken every milestone? Is being able to watch your family change and grow over time again and again, and being able to remember the little moments and feelings that came along with it. We may have different reasons to why we are always taking photos, even if it’s of the same people. Being able to capture our journey, allows our history to be something our future kids can be a part of, from just looking at the photos – letting them see and know who we were once like, how we were like. Your memories become theirs.

We saw two beautiful people who are now parents of three. Dear Rinihartini, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey, to capture the precious milestones in your life and see your little family grow bigger. We could not express our awe of the love you have as a family. We hope that one day your children could feel it too from looking at the photos.

It all began when Rinihartini and Nizam booked their first maternity shoot with us in 2016. Can you believe it? It’s been nearly seven years now. So much has changed.

And they became three! The couple booked a 2-Months Baby photoshoot with us and would you just look their baby. As much as we love Newborn Photography, there’s something about 1-2 Months Photoshoot that makes it precious in its own way. We love their facial expressions and the special moments when parents are carrying and sniffing their babies. They will never be this tiny again.

Sometimes, we manage to get similar looking poses of the babies from photoshoots that we’ve taken in different years – like the two images above & below! Two photos that say a thousands of words. 10 months difference… and their baby turned 1-year old for their Cake Smash Photoshoot.

When Rinihartini was expecting her second child, we felt very honoured to be part of her journey to document this moment again. Some might wonder, why do some mummies have a photoshoot for every pregnancy? Doesn’t it look the same? Here are some reasons why mummies take photos of all of their pregnancies:

    1) Mummies get to reminisce each pregnancy

Every pregnancy is different. Pregnancy itself is so special. Your first-born – you were excited and thrilled. Not exactly sure what is to come, but ready to take in and learn everything for your baby together, first time as a family.

Second child – you are feeling more prepared and calm for your second pregnancy. But now, you are thrilled to share your excitement with your first-born, seeing him or her responding to having another little brother or sister.

    2) Building a significant moment for the elder siblings to remember about having another sibling

Sometimes we can’t remember everything that happened during our childhood when we are older. Celebrating sometimes helps to build a significant moment that could help them remember in the future, of the time when the family was expecting another baby together.

    3) Getting everyone involved in the change and growth

While pregnancy can feel like it’s a solo job for the mummy at times, going out for a breather and spending time with the family can get the kids involved! Rubbing the tummy, kissing the tummy and more. Some elder siblings might get a little fearful of changes too. Spending the time with them to celebrate makes them feel that having a newborn baby coming into the family is fun. It becomes a family activity.

And the family becomes four! The fun part – a photo of the whole family. Might be tricky :D, but definitely worth the time.

Annnnd the family expanded from 4 to 5!

Photos are sentimental. These are the things families look back to and remember how far they’ve gone as a family. It may even be a source of motivation to them, the reason why we keep going.

There is a saying that goes, “Children Spell LOVE as TIME. There may be many reasons as to why you cannot be with your children but none of them can replace the time lost. Once lost, it’s gone forever, you can never recreate the moment again.”

Being able to watch Rinihartini’s family and many families grow, and to provide a tangible memory for families is the greatest reward to us.

    Jolene Tay

We had a GREAT TIME shooting with Shafiq! He was friendly and cheerful early in the morning and most importantly, great with kids! It was a challenge shooting with an energetic 6 year old and cranky and sleepy 3 month old, but Shafiq made it a breeze. He was patient when baby was fussing and even assured us it was OK for baby to take a break first while he shot the others. He also tried to incorporate a sleeping baby into our family shot and was quick to capture the fleeting moments when baby was awake or smiling. Really quick thinking on his part! It was truly pleasant interacting with Shafiq and he made today’s photoshoot a great experience for us (and a great start to my birthday for myself)! I truly enjoy the whole process and experience of having my family shots with Bambini and will look forward to more family photoshoots in the years to come to document my boys growing up. Looking forward to the photos to come! (Also loving it that Bambini has a really efficient turnover time after the photoshoot)

Family Photoshoots – Watching Kids Grow

Since we started in 2009, we had been very lucky to witness the love and care in families, and watch them grow from the family photoshoots they’ve had with us through the years.

      Chronicles of the Reijngoudt Family

We first met the Reijngoudt family of 7 at Singapore Botanic Gardens in 2012. The youngest boy was 16 months at that time.

The following year, they were back for another family session, this time at West Coast Park.

In 2015, they came back to capture the memories of the kids, this time in our studio. The growth we saw in these kids were phenomenal. We can’t help but keep staring at the photos of them and thinking to ourselves how much they’ve grown since our last session. It seemed like yesterday!

In 2018, we got a note from mum saying this time round, we have a new member, one of the boy’s girlfriend will also be joining in the photoshoot too!

Once lost, it’s gone forever, you can never recreate the moment again.” The older kids from the Reijngoudt family are already in their late teens, early 20’s now. Perhaps away from home for their studies.

Being able to watch Reijngoudt family and many families grow, and to provide a tangible memory for families is the greatest reward to us.

Top 3 Reasons Why Printing Photos Are So Important

Remember the feeling you got the first time you took a photo? When you wanted to capture and seize that moment so that it could last for a lifetime? It’s that warm fuzzy feeling when we get to have a memento of the people we love.

Printing Photos – In the Past

Back in the days when we couldn’t view the images immediately, we had to wait patiently until we use up all the 24 or 36 frames in the roll of film before we can send it in to the lab for processing and printing before we can even see the finished photos.

We would compile all of the prints in those albums that came together for free with the prints. The more artistic ones will take the trouble to put them in nicer looking albums instead of the ones that the lab give to us free :D The even more artistic ones will take more time to turn the prints into a photo album or scrapbook by adding some text or story in the album – where it was taken, when it was taken and what was the occasion…

The best part about that is it becomes a tangible memory for us. It is one of the main reasons why we became photographers ourselves. Being able to witness a family make time to come together for a photoshoot, gets us emotional inside and we just want it to be able to last forever for them.

        Printing Photos – Now

We all know the drill. We take a ton of pictures on our phones, and they just sit there. Or, we post them on social media but never really do anything with them. And then, when we want to look back at them, we can’t even find them!

Even though photos are more easily taken these days with smartphones, we don’t seem print photos as much as we used to. We do post them on social media to update friends and families what we’ve been up to lately, by sharing what we have eaten to sharing beautiful moments with the family. Aside from that, it is also partly to “archives” the photos in social media platforms as a back up just in case the computer crash or we lose our phone. The only back up left is the preview resolution of those stored in social media. Social media is known to be notorious in compressing the image so they save some space by allowing you to use the platform for free. When you need it, and when it is time to print, the compressed resolution images looks good from far… but it is far from good once you see it up close!

It’s always easy to convince ourselves that we will print the photos soon, someday soon… but there is never really a good time. We are pretty occupied with our daily tasks, caring for our own kids, running the household, juggling work, and caring for parents. Sorting photos and printing photos from the gazillion number of images stored in our phones is time-consuming and we tend to procrastinate on this task. We just had several clients who only keep “digital copies” on their computers and ask if we still keep them after many years as they have lost their images due to computer crashes.

Memories are like money, there is no purpose of it until you need it. Like when someone has passed on, or when our kids need a shot of our family for school the following week, or you need those pictures for a birthday announcement coming up. It is easy to not do anything now… only to find yourself in dire situations when you need it.

So here are our top 3 reasons why we feel printing photos are important:

        1. It becomes a tangible memory

A printed photo becomes something our future kids can touch and look closely into. It’s displayed, its on the wall, its on the desk, its inside the album. You don’t need to search through the various files, folders and deep archives to find the images that you took years ago in the computer. Its there! Printed and hung on the wall or compiled in an album.

Just like when our parents showed us their old photos, it creates conversations about how our families were like when they were younger – how they used to climb on coconut trees or went for a swim in a longkang. Who would have thought our fierce aunties were that playful!

Mini details like these, helps to paint a picture of how our loved ones were once like and bring us closer to them. It’s very heartwarming to see our kids taking out the family albums or even those kindergarten graduation photos and making jokes about how small their siblings were or commenting that they still remember our relative who has passed away.

Plus, printed photos are more accessible for our non-tech savvy parents and our very young kids who we want to limit their screen time to the ‘wonders’ of phones and computers. They wouldn’t need to reach out to the phone or computer to find the files, its just there everyday.

Worst case scenario when you need them in a digital copy, have them converted.

Enjoy your photos every day you when you walk past where the images are being displayed.

        2. It ties people to places, experiences and emotions

When we look at the image taken the first time, we might notice things like how we used to look. But as time passes, what we get to see are the moments, the emotions, and the experiences that we had with people that was with us.

The first few seconds from just looking at a photo immediately brings us back to our old homes, our old playgrounds, our old treasured memory. Sometimes when we pause for a little while and just take a look around us, we get to see how far our families have come and remember how we first started out. It ties us back to our roots and our purposes in life. Small things that we see on a photo, like that blanket we used to hug to sleep, reminds us of even the atmosphere, feelings, and scents of that particular time in our lives.

Our world is so fast-moving and there isn’t time to look for the images in our phones or our laptops; have it there ready every time and its great to just stop and re-live those moments…

        3. It strengthens us

Lately with the fast-paced life, we get too pre-occupied with our work and we lose sight of our purposes in life and why we do what we do. Sometimes when days are low, we forget about how fortunate we still are to be where we are now. Some people place photo frames on their work-desks, some along the walls of their house, just to remind them of who we are and the people who have made the person we are today… and that even when we have bad days, we will always have our family behind us and in our hearts to push us through in life.

Our vision in Bambini as photographers is always to help families preserve their memories.

Memories is an essential part of us.
        Memories brings people closer together.
        Memories grows the love stronger.

We will always strive for that no matter how fast the digital world is changing. That is the reason why we at Bambini Photography always include printed photo in all of our packages even if it is just 1!

If you need ideas on how to turn your soft copies to tangible photos, do let us know and we can work with you to come up with something.

Or are you thinking of buying a personal and lasting gift for your loved ones to remind him/her of the milestone in their life? We have gift vouchers available that can be personalised to include your personal message and the recipient’s name.
