Syafiq, better known as Mr Potato, is the photographer behind Bambini Photography’s studio sessions today.

From newborn babies and maternity portraits to children, families, graduates, large multi-generation groups and professional headshots, he works with people at very different stages of life.

His approach to photoshoots is simple. Understand the people in front of him, give clear direction when it is needed, and keep the session moving without making photography feel more complicated than it needs to be.

Photography Started Long Before Bambini

Mr Potato’s interest in photography and video started during his polytechnic days, when he was already creating photographs and videos for media, performances and pre-show content.

In 2012, he got his first camera and began exploring photography more seriously.

A year later, he joined Nadi Singapura, adding live performances and production experience to his creative background.

In 2016, he worked as an educator at a drama school, an experience that helped develop his ability to communicate with and engage children. Those skills later proved useful behind the camera, especially when helping young children and feel comfortable during a photoshoot.

He moved into professional studio photography in 2019 before joining Bambini Photography in 2020, where he has photographed across the studio’s range of portrait sessions ever since.

From Newborns to Grandparents

No two photoshoots require quite the same approach.

A newborn session requires patience and attention to the baby’s cues. Young children may need play and flexibility. Teenagers often appreciate less fuss. Adults who aren’t comfortable in front of the camera need clear direction. And a multi-generation family with grandparents, adult children and grandchildren needs organisation to keep the session moving.

Hart continues to mentor Mr Potato and the Bambini team in portrait photography, working with people and the client experience.

How Mr Potato Approaches A Photoshoot?

Clear Direction Without Expecting You to Know How To Pose

Most clients aren’t professional models and don’t arrive knowing where to stand, what to do with their hands. Mr Potato guides the session and adjusts the direction according to who is being photographed.

Working With Children

Children don’t always follow the plan, which is absolutely normal. Mr Potato is known for being light-hearted and funny during sessions, and children often warm up to him quickly. It helps that introducing himself as “Mr Potato” usually gets a reaction. Apparently it’s much more memorable to a child than “Photographer Syafiq”.

Keeping Large Families Organised

With multi-generation families, organisation matters. Mr Potato prioritises the main family portrait before working through individual family units and requested combinations, while keeping the session moving so grandparents and children aren’t waiting longer than necessary.
