Maternity Photography – Then & Now | Bambini Photography Singapore

Maternity Photography

How much are you aware of the maternity photography scene in Singapore? If you had been following us yet don’t know much about us, Bambini Photography started our offering photo shoot in 2009 shooting mainly children and family, sharing a studio space with our parent company, Tomato Photo. We then expanded to cover maternity photography and newborn photo shoots. You can read all about Bambini Story here.

As Steve Jobs says, every overnight success took a long time to achieve. Our success in Maternity Photography seems like an overnight success. However, behind the scenes, we plan, we brainstorm, we test and we have created some of the most highly sought after maternity images in Singapore. Our work is not done yet, as we still have a plans to introduce more maternity images that we call our own. For those of you that love Japanese culture, it is the Kaizen approach and we have adopt this mindset to always create and improve upon what is already in demand.

There is definitely a story to tell on our maternity images whilst we spend the extra time reflecting and looking back at we have done over the course of 12 years. We never settle with where we are today.

Who Started Popularising Maternity Photography?

Since 1995, Vanity Fair had Demi Moore looking all glorious with her belly swelling on its cover page, photographed by the legendary Annie Leibovitz. It was an overnight sensation that sparked the talk about a new age of photography, breaking barriers and gave rise to the prominence of maternity photoshoot. Thereafter, you see celebrities around the world like Miranda Kerr, Natalie Portman, Zhang Ziyi, Angela Baby, Beyonce and many others having their pregnancy photo on the cover of magazines.

Is It All In The Clothing?

We had been photographing expectant women for a while now and we often get asked if we actually do fully clothed maternity shots! In fact, many do expect the shoot to show the curves of the baby bump. After all, that curve is the objective of the shoot ain’t it? Well, yes and no.

Some clients come dressed in their scrubs, sports attire, beautiful dresses; some bring in their sari, wedding veil and even a hamburger as a prop.

Some, come armed with props such as lipstick, ultrasound, name boards, customised baby clothing/shoes…..to personalise the shoot for pregnancy announcement or revealing if baby will be a boy or a girl. Essentially memories and how the parents are feeling at this point of time.

They do this not because they merely try to be different but more to personalise their shoot. They’re simply making memories, perhaps reliving the time when they both met before baby came along; or mum was craving hamburger throughout the pregnancy. Something meaningful to the couple and having stories to tell the kids in time to come.

A Walk Down Memory Lane With Bambini Photography’s Maternity Images

With lots of time on our hand during this circuit breaker period, we went through our image archive and seen clients who had taken their maternity photos for their 1st, 2nd and 3rd child; and have since graduated to annual family photo sessions with us.

The images created then and now; our style of maternity photos had also evolved since 2009. We started off doing mostly dark and moody images in the earlier days and gradually moved onto light and airy romantic shots. Scroll down for more. Images arranged in chronological order.

We spent the last 11 years creating the various styles of photography and made it into a Maternity Photoshoot Lookbook! We are sure you will find a style(s) that suits what you have in mind….

Thanks Bambini for our wonderful maternity photoshoot! The team was ever so patient with us even though it was absolute chaos with a toddler and a golden retriever, and somehow they managed to keep them entertained throughout the shoot too. How To Tell Friends About Your Pregnancy? – Pregnancy Announcement Photoshoot

How To Tell Friends About Your Pregnancy? – Pregnancy Announcement Photoshoot

You just discovered you are expecting a baby and you are bursting with excitement to share the news with your friends.

In the ‘olden’ days, you’ll probably be calling and texting all of your good friends and share the news over a meal.

These days, with everyone is so busy with their life and we have too many things that we want to share with the world, social media is one of the medium that majority of people would break the happy news to their friends.

You no longer have to wait for the right timing to call your BFF overseas to break the news, they can just find it all out on your social media.

The trend of pregnancy announcement photoshoots started in the west where the primary intention was make this milestone memorable. After all, there will only be a couple of times in your life where you get to share this piece of news!

Pregnancy Photoshoot

Since we started in 2009, we had been photographing expecting women in their 30+ weeks to record their beautiful baby bump. Most, if not all of these women came because of wanting to document their special time in their lives regardless of how big or small they have become. So that they have stories and tangible memories to share with their kids when they grow up. View more maternity portfolio.

Whilst we photograph thousands of expecting women, we have also heard of many parents-to-be letting us know that they decided not to proceed with a maternity photoshoot because they have gained a lot of weight during the pregnancy and then when the baby arrived, they regretted their decision. They wish they did it, but there is no way we can turn back time.

For women, that’s very real… we all wish to go through a smooth pregnancy, experience very little to none of the morning sickness, gain weight gradually within the normal healthy range, look glowy and healthy during pregnancy.

However, every one of us are unique, every pregnancy is different, how our body changes during the pregnancy is also different.

So rather than missing an important milestone, let’s discuss what you could do instead.

When To Do A Pregnancy Photoshoot?

I think we all can agree that memories of our life is the most important thing. That is why, we spend a lot of our resources in finding new food adventure to enrich our life, we travel to seek more adventures to create more memories. However, there are only so much food to eat, travel is non existent until the world is back to normal, so an alternative way of making and capturing memories are important.

With thousands of clients coming to have their pregnancy shoots done, you know one of the way to preserve those important memories is through photography, the question really is, would you like to have it or rather regret not having it.

Various parents-to-be would have their take on what they feel is important for their memories.

Top 3 Stages Of Pregnancy Photography

  1. Pregnancy Announcement @ ~12 weeks
  2. From Bump to 1 Year Old & Beyond
  3. All in One Pregnancy Shoot ~33th Week

1. Pregnancy Announcement @ ~ 12 Weeks

Social butterflies or not, this is one of the joyous moments in your lives when you first found out a new life growing in you. Whilst you were trying hard to keep this a secret from your friends, you were also bursting with excitement to tell your friends at the same time.

Pregnancy announcement photoshoot is usually done around 11th/12th week mark and would suit clients who feel great when the baby bump haven’t quite showed up yet and can still fit into their beautiful ‘before pregnancy clothing’. More so for clients who are focused in making memories tangible.

For Sanche and Li Meng (their announcement images featured below), who have done maternity session for their first child and then an extended family shoot with us previously. They told us that they were looking to document their pregnancy journey with professionally taken photos. Once to announce their joy having a new addition to the family, another time to perhaps reveal the gender of their 2nd child, followed by the the full maternity photoshoot around the 33th week mark.

With that in mind, we have recently created a mini pregnancy announcement photoshoot session for couples who are in their 10th week to 16th week mark. A quick 20 minutes studio session for that purpose. Send us an email to learn more!

2. From Baby Bump to 1 Year Old & Beyond

We first met Cherubim in June 2019 for her maternity studio and maternity milk bath photoshoot. Thereafter the family continued on the journey of memory preservation during the newborn stage, sitter stage and then recently celebrating one year old birthday of Baby Chaylon with a family and cake smash photoshoot. View the video below to watch their family grow.

I got attracted to Bambini Photography first because I was attracted to their milk bath maternity photoshoot; it was something really unique and i wanted something special for my precious pregnancy. I was then wow-ed by their great services and attentiveness to details (even to caring how my hair would flow). I then subsequently got the newborn photo session package, and the 6-month sitter package, and more recently the 1-year cake smash Photo session with them. The service standard is consistently great. The photographers were so much fun and patient, and so personalised and explored different variation of poses for the whole family to try. My daughter was like having a play time in their studio. The photos came out awesome as it truly reflects how the dynamics of our family is. This would not have been possible without the fantastic photographers. Highly recommended! And many thanks to the super fun Mag who facilitated and took many wonderful photos of us all in the recent photoshoot. – Cherubim, July 2020

3. All-In-One Photoshoot @~ 33th week.

With some mum to be feeling their best around the 2nd trimester and early 3rd trimester. They decide to do the announcment shots, gender reveal and baby bump photos in one session. We taken these type of shots during the maternity session over the years since 2009.  The sky is the limit when it comes to imagination! Scroll down to view more.

So… what’s your take?

The above are all important based on how and what you feel about your life, about your baby, about your family. After all, memories (tangible & intangible) only become ALOT MORE VALUABLE and important after time had passed.

Whilst we collect gazillion types of Intangible memories in our lives and have them registered in one part of our brain, you’ll need to activate your mind to pick out that part of memories later on and talk about it with the children and family. TANGIBLE MEMORIES become somewhat more relatable when you get to see it in your daily lives (e. on the wall, on the desk frame, in an album etc). It becomes easier for your children to relate to when you pull out the proofs when you talk to them about it.

Bambini Photography have come across many families since 2009 and had the privilege to grow with them since then. The newborns we had photographed have now grown into tweens; the tweens we had photographed had now grown into a young adult chasing their own rainbows. (view their stories HERE).

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory. – Dr. Seuss

Just wanted to say We are so extremely lucky to have Magdalene as our photographer. I was quite nervous for the shoot, 35 weeks pregnant and half nude yet she really made me feel so comfortable in my own skin. She made the shoot really fun and enjoyable. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Magdalene is super friendly & bubbly and approachable – you can trust her to choose outfits for you, and of course: take amazing photos. I’m so glad to have met her and if possible would definitely engage her services again in the near future for any photoshoot that we need.

Pregnancy Photoshoots – Important Safety Tips

    Pregnancy Photoshoot – Safety Tips

You know how sometimes we browse for photo inspiration and goes “Eh, I think I can pose like that too!”

And we start to screenshot the photos happily wanting to follow the exact pose and “feel”.

“Is it achievable?” “I really like it and I want to tell the photographer before the shoot to follow the exact style!”

We thought we’ll share with you some of the questions you have in achieving these dancing shots (a popular request by pregnant mummies).

    Is it easy?….

It seems like it is something I can do too?…..

    Is it safe? …..

Do I have to be a dancer to achieve this? …..

It can always be edited by photoshop right?…..

We will be sharing all the “tried and tested” Q&A session on the entire experience with you thanks to our experienced photographers and our dancer mummies!

Q: I really like this pose for it looks so elegant, is it safe? Do i have to be a dancer to achieve this?

A: Your safety is always our number 1 priority and yes it helps if you are a dancer because it would mean that you have been practising for a period of time. You will also know your body best, how flexible you are and how much you can “push” for the angles you would like to pose and achieve.

This beautiful mummy in the photo has been practising dancing for over a decade and she shared with us that she is really comfortable twisting and have no problem balancing. She wished to include dancing movements and poses in her pregnancy photoshoot because dancing has played a huge part in her life. Our photographer, was the one who was more concern and kept asking if she is doing ok instead!

    Maternity Photoshoot_Dancer

Q: I am not a dancer and would love to pose like one. Will you be able to help?

A: Our photographers are trained to help ease you into posing comfortably and safely but it is also important for you to understand your body.

For dancing poses it helps if your body is more flexible even if you have no dancing background, for instance you have been practising yoga or pilates, it might help you balance better.

Your body’s center of gravity is constantly changing during pregnancy, you might be less coordinated and may even find it harder to maintain your balance. It is important to share information with your photographer for example you have been practising yoga and pilates and would like to add some poses into the shoot or you have learned chinese dance before and would like to incorporate some of the postures because this will help our professional photographer to better achieve what you want.

This is also why our professional photographers will always discuss with you prior your pregnancy photoshoot session to better understand your likes and preferences.

    Pregnancy Photoshoot Dancer

Q: Can you include some dancing poses with me and my husband because it looks cute and fun? Are you able to help us?

A: You can most definitely show our photographers what you really like and they will be able to advise you based on your movements and flexibility. It would be best to also discuss with your husband at home and try out some of the various dancing poses that you like.

Sometimes what we think in our mind does not necessary translate into our actual posing, so this will allow you both to see if you are able to recreate what you like. It is also important to remember to have fun and enjoy the studio photoshoot session so that when you look back at the photos, it is not only meaningful but in time to come will turn into stories to be shared with your children.

    Pregnancy Photo Dancer

Q: But I really really like that pose and I want to create the same!

A: Our photographers will always prioritise your safety and give their best in helping you create what you like. With that being said, there are many other factors to take into consideration as well.

To manage your expectations, our photographers will discuss with you and try to recreate similar pose based on safety, your body flexibility, how well you can balance, stretch, just to list a few.

Q: Do you provide dancing costumes? Or do I have to bring my own outfits?

A: We do provide a variety of outfits to choose from and you can get some outfit inspiration. You are also welcome to bring your own outfits to make the photoshoot session more personalised and intimate.

Impressive service, exceptional photography. We booked a family/maternity shoot for a weekend morning, but when the day arrived, everything seemed to go wrong: my makeup artist was a no-show and my daughter was sick and very cranky as a result. We nearly wanted to postpone the shoot, but decided not to in the end. Our photographer, Fatilyn, and another of the staff, Melissa, were very patient in handling our fussy child and managing the entire session. Still, I wasn’t too optimistic about the outcome, until I saw the photos, which were sent to us the very next day. They are of great quality and we couldn’t have asked for a better set of photos despite the circumstances that day! – Clarice Ting

8 Tips to Dressing Your Bump! | What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot

What To Wear For Maternity Photoshoot?

Doing your Maternity Photoshoots soon or still can’t decide what to wear?

We understand the dilemma of selecting that perfect wardrobe can be daunting.

After thousands of maternity shoots, let us help you! Here are some tips…

Outfit Inspiration For Maternity Photo Shoot

    1. Maxi Dress

Maxi dresses are perfect for maternity shoots as they are very comfortable and flattering. It’s great for showing off your beautiful baby bump, but can also cover up any ‘problem areas’. The dress can be halter neck, 3/4 sleeved, off-shoulders or even sleeveless, take your pick!

    2. Body Hugging Clothing

Body hugging clothing looks great to show off those beautiful pregnancy curves. It’s simple and keeps the attention drawn to your tummy and you.

    3. Solid Colours

We recommend solid colours as this would help your bump stand out the most. Simple solid color focus the attention on your baby bump.

    4. Bare Your Bump

If you’d like to show off your bare bump, we recommend wearing a solid, coloured tube and matching bottom. You can also wear crop tops or a shirt with buttons undone and matching bottoms/denims (non-maternity type) to show off the shape of your bump

    5. Texture

You can make your photos look more interesting by wearing clothing with different textures. It’s a great alternative to prints or patterns, and adds more dimension to your photos. You can wear an embroidered top, lace dress or pair your denim jeans with a cotton shirt. Be creative!

    6. For More Intimate/Sensual Images

If you’re thinking of doing a more intimate and sensual shoot, we recommend bringing along some nice lingerie or sheer baby doll dresses in soft muted colours.

Sheer, lace robes are also perfect for that soft romantic look. They show off your baby bump but also help hide any unflattering areas.

If you’re thinking of getting your own robes, we recommend the robes from Bell & Birds! You can check out our blogpost to see how we styled these robes during a maternity studio and milk bath shoot. We also have an exclusive discount code for Bambini’s clients, use “Bambini10” to get 10% off all purchases from their online store!

Or go for something edgy, robes like these or even a leather jacket works too!

    7. Simply Use What We Have In The Studio

Feeling tired, out of wits, out of time, simply not sure or whatever reasons, no worries!

We have a selection of clothing and materials in our studio too, just let us know beforehand so we can get ready some ideas and prep the fabric drapes, dresses, tubes and bottoms for your maternity photo shoot!

We will style it up for you! Some mummies prefer to go completely bare under the drapes, if not you can bring nude/black/white coloured undies to wear underneath.

    8. Modest Wear – Maternity Photoshoot

Modest wear has been on a rising trend and here’s some ideas how you can match it up for your maternity session with us. We look most beautiful when we feel confident and comfortable with ourselves. With that, the photos will show your pregnancy glow too.

Big trees that towers over you, a fascinating sight for your children and of course, running space in the fields! We can even head to the Jacob Ballas children’s garden – you know it’s designed for children when the security stops you when there is no accompanying child in sight to gain entry into the garden.
